Mapping in Krakow

Mapping in Krakow

For mapping visible religion in Cracow, we are using the app ArcGIS which allows us to collect detailed information about each item. Thanks to GPS, the app can register each point that we enter very accurately. For each item that we find in the city—be it an image, a building, or even a person—we have specific categories to fill out. The first of them is, of course, religion: What religion does the respective item belong to or refer to? What sounds easy at first is sometimes hard to answer. At times, we cannot know its affiliation for sure, e.g. when we see a figure or image of an angel somewhere. Being in Poland, there is a high probability that the angel is part of a Catholic context. But we need to consider that there are other Christian groups in Poland, too, that could use an angel figure, or even non-Christians. This decision is of scientific importance, and it also has an ethic notion. Religious minorities are easily overlooked in public discourse. It is even more important for us as academic to be very accurate and not make hasty decisions. Thus, we have introduced categories such as “Christian non-specific” and “various” to indicate that an item could be part of several religious traditions, or that it is combined with an item of another religion.
