GDAŃSK

Gdańsk is a coastal city often presented as free, open-minded, and multicultural. Actually, the city has been relatively monolithic for centuries. Its life has been dominated by one language and a single religion. Before the Second World War, the vast majority of its inhabitants spoke German and adhered to Lutheranism; after 1945, Gdańsk became Polish and Catholic (Loew 2006: 57–71). The Protestant heritage is exemplified by the ornamentlessness of the old town’s churches. The Polish national Catholicism is displayed within the spaces and narratives of the Gdańsk Shipyard. The imaginary urban space of the shipyard refers not only to Polish Catholicism but also to the German and to the communist heritages. The city’s Fine Art Academy is also considered as one of the most important places on the map of Polish contemporary art world, linked to multiple controversial events in relation to religious issues.
